What are cookies and pixels?

A cookie is a small text file stored on a user’s device that may later be retrieved by a web server from the device. Cookies allow web servers to do certain things like remember that you are logged in.

A pixel, web beacon or GIF is a very small image that may be found within web pages and emails that requires a call to our servers in order for the pixel to be rendered in those web pages and emails—this call provides information about your device and visit. We use pixels, web beacons or GIFs to learn more about your interactions with email content or web content, such as whether you interacted with emails or articles. Pixels can also enable us and third parties to place cookies on your browser.

An embedded script is programming code that is designed to collect information about your interactions with our Site, such as the links and articles you click on. The code is temporarily downloaded onto your device from our web server or a third-party service provider.

A feature of the cache in browsers, an ETag is an opaque identifier assigned by a web server to a specific version of a resource found at a URL. If the resource content at that URL ever changes, a new and different ETag is assigned. Used in this manner, ETags are a form of device identifier. ETag tracking generate unique tracking values ,or device IDs, which may be used for marketing purposes, even where the consumer blocks HTTP, Flash, and/or HTML5 cookies.

Different types of cookies?

Cookies typically are classified as either session cookies or persistent cookies. Session cookies disappear from your device or browser when you turn off your device. Persistent cookies remain on your browser even if you turn off your device. We use both persistent cookies and session cookies.

The following is a list of the cookies we use:

Strictly Necessary Cookies: These cookies are required to let you navigate our Site and use its features. They are also used to ensure we have a proper cookie banner. Without these cookies, certain Site functionalities would not be possible. You cannot opt-out of these cookies.

Cookie Name

WordPress uses the cookie wordpress_[hash] to store the authentication details on login. The authentication details include the username and double hashed copy of the password. However, this usage of the cookie is limited to the admin console area, the backend dashboard of the website.

The cookie wordpress_logged_in_[hash] is used to indicate when you are logged in, and who you are. This cookie is maintained on the front-end of the website as well when logged in.

Here [hash] represents the value that is obtained by applying a specific mathematical formula applied to the username and password. It is to ensure that the input values are safe, and no one can access these data using the cookies as it is difficult to ‘unhash’ the hashed data.

WordPress also sets a cookie named wordpress_test_cookie to check if the cookies are enabled on the browser to provide appropriate user experience to the users. This cookie is used on the front-end, even if you are not logged in.

The cookie wp-settings-{time}-[UID] is used to customize the view of your admin interface and the front-end of the website. The value represented by [UID] is the individual user ID of the user as given to them in the users’ database table.
